HSL carries out routine microbiological tests for bacterial contamination, specialist tests for legionella and pseudomonas as well as tests for metals required by water quality standards.
230023 Dialysis Water Testing
HSL provides hospitals and patients with home dialysis units with a water testing service. The service includes total viable cell counts and endotoxin levels together with periodic measurement of metals present.
The quality of the water is judged against the criteria specified in Clinical Practice guidelines (5.2 and 5.3) Microbiological contaminants in product water used for the preparation of dialysis fluid. UK Renal Association and Renal Transplantation.
Low flux dialysis water should contain TVC count of less than 100 CFU/ml and an endotoxin concentration of less than 0.25 EU/m. High flux dialysis water should contain a total viable count of less than 0.1 CFU/ml and an endotoxin level of less than 0.03 EU/ml.
HSL will collect water samples and the test will be carried out in a UKAS approved laboratory
Water samples are tested for the presence of Pseudomonas by plate culture method.
230026 Total Viable Microbial Counts (TVC)
Enumeration of total viable cells from 1 ml of water sample using plate culture method.
The presence of endotoxins is measured by the limulus Amoebocyte lysate turbidimetric method (LAL)
We can routinely test for most metals including -calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium and the isotopes 9Be, 27AL, 52Cr, 65Cu, 66ZN, 75As, 82Se, 107Ag, 111Cd, 121Ba, 202Hg, 205Ti and 208Pb.
230028 Chlorine testing.
HSL can carry out weekly chlorine testing according to the Clinical Practice Guidelines 4.1-4.4, UK Renal Association and Renal Transplantation.
