β-N-acetylglucosaminidase is also known as:

hexosaminidase; β-acetylaminodeoxyhexosidase; N-acetyl-β-D-hexosaminidase; N-acetyl-beta-hexosaminidase; β-hexosaminidase; β-acetylhexosaminidinase; β-D-N-acetylhexosaminidase; β-N-acetyl-D-hexosaminidase; β-N-acetylglucosaminidase; hexosaminidase A; N-acetylhexosaminidase; β-D-hexosaminidase; NAG or HEX.

Applications

In mammals, β-N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) is a lysosomal enzyme which catalyses the breakdown of gangliosides and other related glycosides. The assay of urinary NAG activity has been used for the diagnosis of kidney damage and diabetic complications. Elevated serum NAG activity is also associated with some cancers.
