For the differential identification of Candida species
Infections due to Candida species and other fungi have increased dramatically in recent years. Candida albicans is one of the most commonly isolated fungal pathogens in humans. However, the prevalence of non-albicans Candida species with a resistance to amphotericin B and the azoles has risen, posing serious health problems. Rapid identification of micro-organisms in general prevents treatment with effective drugs, having a major impact on the morbidity, mortality and duration of hospitalisation.
This agar is based upon a Sabouraud Dextrose formulation containing the company’s glucosaminide substrate. All strains of Candida albicans grown on this agar produce unique deep pink/red spotted colonies within 24-48 hours of incubation at 37°C. Colonies of C. kefyr and C. tropicalis produce uniformly pink colonies with all other species producing white colonies.
- Identifies C.albicans, C.kefyr, C.tropicalis and other species
- Rapid identification within 24h
- 100% sensitivity. In an evaluation study, using 125 strains of Candida spp., the sensitivity of CDA was 100%. (See references)
- Superior to other commercially available Chromogenic Candida agars found by an evaluation study. (See references)
- The colouration of the yeast colonies is distinctly different.
- Available in plates or as medium
All strains of C.albicans grown on the agar produce deep pink/red spots on the colonies at 37°C. C. kefyr and C. tropicalis produce pink colonies. All other species produce white colonies.
The Candida Diagnostic Agar can be purchased in two different forms as a dry media or set of pre-poured plates.
Candida albicans (red spotted distinct colonies)
Candida kephyr (dark red colonies)
Candida tropicalis (red colonies)
